Bespoke Illustration
This personal project reimagines the cover for AndrΓ© Aciman's Call Me by Your Name. I love this book β Aciman's writing is so rich and vibrant that illustration felt like the natural pairing rather than photography or vector work.βββββββ
I wasn't trying to depict a scene literally. I wanted to convey the beautifully rich visual emotion of Aciman's writing β the blissful, romantic, idyllic Italian summer that feels magical. I wanted to create something that carries that magic through line, form, color, and texture. I started with a pencil sketch in my sketchbook, and the whole composition came together in that first drawing: the radiating heart/sun, the hand-lettered title, musical notes, celestial elements, peaches. The sketch already had the energy I wanted, so the final in Photoshop was about translating that into color rather than rethinking the concept.
I leaned heavily into warm golds and oranges against cool blues and greens to keep everything feeling sun-soaked and nostalgic. The title was drawn in one pass β I didn't want it to feel overworked. The slightly uneven letterforms reinforce how personal and intimate the story is.
